Shine! - Fashion and Galmour
Exhibition at Budapest History Museum - Kiscell Museum

Glamour has been one of the major trends of the past years. Wherever we look, we see glittering sneakers and backpacks, T-shirts with sequins. Then there are the more refined and expensive dresses, for instance the ones richly decorated with crystals, that are worn by stars on specific occasions or mannequins on the catwalk. By who and why are such pieces chosen? What is the purpose of causing a stir, with attracting the eyes of others? The phenomenon is general, but the answers are different. Today this tool can be used in dressing by anyone, without even requiring a special occasion. In the Textile Collection of the Kiscelli Museum of the Budapest History Museum containing thousands of items, I have from time to time come across valuable and/or curious objects that had something glittering on them. Each of them was worn for a specific occasion in a different period by persons of different social standing. The glint was attributable to the use of various techniques and materials. They showed a rather mixed picture and therefore provided a sufficiently exciting material for an exhibition. In preparing the exhibition, I attempted to look behind the objects, to understand their role and significance in the life of the person who might have worn them. This led me to contemplate the origins of our attraction to light, to glamour.
Clothing is always a mirror: it talks about the age to which it is specific and in which it is fashionable. Hence, these objects can guide us through the changes in dressing standards as influenced by the ever shifting world and the relevant lifestyles. Moreover, valuable, eye-catching and shiny objects played a prominent role in each age and as such are especially suitable for presenting changes in the social environment. Our current obsession with glamour has provided a perfect context for conceiving an exhibition based on the museum’s own collection.
